SELECTION CRITERIA

In the selection panel opinion, the applicant schools will be evaluated on how the school community demonstrates they will benefit from the Great Start Grant and the commitment to staff and space resources to support a band program.

The selection panel will take into account the following criteria relevant to an instrumental music program when choosing a school:

1. Quality of commitment from the entire school community - A strong application will include examples of commitment from not only the music staff, but school leadership, other teaching staff, students, families and even linked communities external to the school (feeder schools, local community ensembles, council etc)

2. Ability to form a clear short, medium, and long-term vision - A successful music program is not developed in a year. A successful application will show a good understanding of what a music program may face in the first years (such as a structured recruitment process, budgeting for purchases such as method books and music stands) as well as the 3-5 year plan (such as acknowledging the need for extended budgets for expansion of the program to include additional instruments, and plans for retention of students).

3. Space resources - Applications must show that the school has adequate space for the preferred music program, such as a room fit for safely rehearsing a 30 piece concert band, or a hall appropriate for the performance of amplified music, as well as safe storage space for the gear provided.

4. Staffing - A music program is only as strong as its staff, and a successful application must show that the school has staff with the knowledge and passion to be able to implement a music program. This applies to staff across all levels of the school.

5. Willingness to regularly partake in professional development - We are lucky in Australia to have a thriving community of music educators, and a successful school music program will show a willingness for staff to continue to grow with our greater community of music educators.

6. Viable student numbers - A successful application will show they the school has a number of students that will allow the program a good level of success.

APPLICATION PROCESS

Schools will need to provide the following via the Great Start Grant application form on our website (au.yamaha.com/en/education/greatstart/2023_grant/index.html) to be considered:

1. Representative contact details and position/relationship to the school

2. Outline the current curricular and co-curricular music activities in the school if any (e.g., student numbers, instruments if applicable, staffing, location(s), etc.)

3. A letter from the principal demonstrating how this grant would benefit their school. This letter should include a statement showing a willingness to support the program with staffing, space, and other necessary resources.

4. A letter from a full-time teacher at the school outlining how the school would implement and coordinate a band program.

5. A letter from a parent outlining how this grant would benefit their child's school and outlining the support that the greater school community could offer the music program.

6. Any other relevant material in support of the application.

A 'Top 3' will be chosen from this and assessed by a panel led by Leigh Olson from the Yamaha Education Outreach Program and including an independent member of the music community. A school will be chosen by the panel to receive the Grant, and a further 2 schools will be chosen to receive a consolation grant of $2000 RRP Yamaha product.
