Elevating Music Education Through Collaboration.

Yamaha Wind Orchestra | ANBOC 2024

The Yamaha Wind Orchestra: Professional Development Project recently concluded its 2024 iteration, bringing together passionate music educators from across Australia with the united goal of enhancing music education. Held in conjunction with the Australian National Band & Orchestra Conference (ANBOC) in the Carey Baptist Grammar School in Kew, Victoria, this year’s project underscored Yamaha Music Australia’s continued commitment to increasing the quality of, and participation in, music education.

Guided by the esteemed Dr. Rob McWilliams, Yamaha Education Outreach Clinician, along with special guest conductor and Yamaha USA Master Educator, Professor Travis J. Cross, 55 dedicated educators from across the country came together for four days of intensive rehearsals, workshops, and collaboration, culminating in a truly fantastic performance as the gala concert of the Australian National Band and Orchestra Conference. This unique opportunity allows educators to nurture their passion for music, refine their skills, and bring fresh inspiration to their teaching.

During the professional development, participants delve into sessions on repertoire selection, program planning, and advanced conducting techniques, all while rehearsing challenging and fulfilling pieces of music. This immersive environment allows educators to practice what they teach, enhancing their skills and improving their teaching methods.

The 2024 project culminated in a gala concert featuring the Yamaha Wind Orchestra and the Carey Baptist Grammar Wind Symphony. The performance showcased a mesmerising array of talent and dedication, with the Yamaha Wind Orchestra presenting the world premiere of "Guilin’s Majesty" by Benjamin Lau, the winner of the 2024 Australian National Composition Competition, as well as "Everlasting Light" by Travis J. Cross, conducted by the composer himself.

The success of Yamaha Wind Orchestra 2024 was possible with the support of key partners, including Fine Music, Ozwinds, Barratt’s Music, and Brass Music Specialists, as well as Carey Baptist Grammar School and St. Kevin’s College. Their ongoing support is instrumental to the success of music education in Australia.

At Yamaha Music Australia, we remain steadfast in our dedication to supporting music educators. Through initiatives like the Yamaha Wind Orchestra, which is just one part of our overall education outreach program, we strive to provide invaluable opportunities for professional growth and artistic expression. As we continue to offer grants, engage clinicians, and provide resources and support, we are committed to ensuring that the future of music education is bright, vibrant, and sustainable.

We are excited to witness the lasting impact these professional development opportunities have on the future of music education across Australia.
