Today we will set up a Performance, Record & Multi Track.
I’m on a CVP809 – the top of the range CVP Clavinova.
We will arrange the piece Little Brown Jug using the OTS – the One Touch Setting function in a Big Band style with AI Fingering.
We will memorise our settings in Registrations and recall them using the foot pedal.
OTS ‘One Touch Setting’
The OTS Link instantly calls up all the settings (Voices, effects, etc.) that match the current STYLE, and automatically turns on ACMP and SYNC START, so that you can start to play.
- Press the ‘OTS LINK’ button.
AI Fingered
By changing the Chord Fingering type, you can automatically produce appropriate accompaniment even if you don’t press all the notes of the chord (See downloadable ‘Score 1’ - Bass clef - Left Hand chord voicing inversions).
- On the HOME display touch Split&Fingering to select the Split Point/Fingering window.
- Multi Finger is currently displayed.
- Under Fingering touch the forward arrow 4 times to select AI Fingered.
Multi Finger: automatically detects Single Finger or Fingered chord fingerings.
AI Fingered: detects more complex chords and inversions with less than three notes based on the previously played chord.
Set Split Point to C3
- Under Split Point touch the forward arrow 6 times, to set to C3 as the ‘Split Point’ (That’s middle C. The default is F#2).
- Touch Close to return to the HOME display.
- The Keyboard now shows C3 as the Split Point.
You can also set the Split Point by pressing the actual key whilst holding down the keyboard illustration on the keyboard display.
Style and Voice Selection
We will select the style Big Band Fast 1.
- Touch the Style Selection Display on the Home screen.
- Touch Standards & Jazz then Big Band.
- Touch Big Band Fast 1.
- Touch Close to exit.
- Press the INTRO II button in the STYLE CONTROL section.
Set tempo to 140BPM
- On the Home screen touch Tempo to select the Tempo display.
- Use the DATA DIAL to set the tempo to 140 bpm.
- Touch Close to return to the HOME display.
Setup registration memory for Little Brown Jug on the Panel
REGISTRATIONS allow you to save your custom settings enabling you to recall and change your settings instantly when performing and recording without having to stop and reset the instrument. To edit your existing Registrations simply re-memorise.
- In the righthand upper corner touch the right arrow to show the Registration area.
- Regist New Bank is displayed.
- Press the MEMORY button in the REGISTRATION MEMORY section to select the Registration Memory window.
- Press REGISTRATION MEMORY 1 button to memorise the current panel setup.
- The INTRO II style and settings are now saved to Registration 1
- To Memorise Main Variation B to Registration 2. Press the MAIN VARIATION B button in the STYLE CONTROL section. The red flashes indicates a fill-in pattern will be played.
- Press the MEMORY button in the REGISTRATION MEMORY section.
- Press REGISTRATION MEMORY 2 button to memorise the panel setup.
- Repeat the above process again to memorise MAIN VARIATION C to REGISTRATION 3
- Repeat the above process again to memorise MAIN VARIATION D to REGISTRATION 4
- Repeat the above process again to memorise ENDING II to REGISTRATION 5
LIGHT INDICATOR:
Red = button contains data and is selected.
Green = button has data but not selected.
Off = button has no data registered.
Name and save registration memory for Little Brown Jug to User
Naming REGISTRATIONS enables you to name and keep track of your settings. The edited names will appear in the Registration display area in the HOME display.
- Press the REGIST BANK + and - buttons simultaneously to select the Registration Bank Select display.
- Touch the Information icon to select the Registration Bank Information window.
- Touch Registration 1 New Regist to select REGISTRATION 1.
- Touch the Rename icon to select the Character Entry window.
- Touch and hold Delete to delete New Regist.
- Type in Intro & A section then touch OK.
Name Remaining Registrations
- Touch REGISTRATION 2 New Regist.
- Touch the rename icon then touch and hold Delete to delete New Regist and then type in B section then touch OK. As above.
- Repeating above process rename Registration 3 to C Section.
- Repeating above process rename Registration 4 to D Section.
- Repeating above process rename Registration 5 to End.
- Touch Close to exit.
Name and Save Little Brown Jug to the USER Registration Bank
Registrations are saved in the Registration Bank. Hundreds of Banks can be stored on the instrument and on USB for instant recall to the Panel Registration Memory.
- Touch the Save icon to select the saving destination.
- Touch Save here to select the Character entry window.
- Touch and hold Delete to delete New Bank.
- Type in Little Brown Jug then touch OK.
- Touch Close to exit.
- Little Brown Jug and the current registration 5 End appears in the Registration display area. You now have your 5 registrations for Little Brown Jug memorised on the Panel Registration Memory and saved on the USER drive as a single bank.
Setup Registration Sequence and Pedal
Turn on Registration Sequence and assign Left Pedal
A Registration Sequence enables you to change registrations using the pedal, freeing up your hands for the performance.
- To turn on the Registration Sequence touch Menu then touch RegistSeq.
- Touch Sequence Off to turn the Sequence on.
- Touch Regist +.
- Touch Left.
- Touch Close.
Insert Registrations 1 to 5 in the Registration Sequence
The currently selected Registration on the panel will be inserted into the Registration Sequence.
- Push REGISTRATION MEMORY 1 in the REGISTRATION MEMORY section.
- Touch Insert to insert the Sequence Data.
- Repeat the above two steps for REGISTRATION MEMORY 2,3,4 and 5.
Set how the Registration Sequence ends and save
- Touch Stop to set to Top. This sets the sequence to start again at the beginning when the Registration Sequence reaches the end.
- Touch the save icon to select the saving destination.
- Touch Save here to select the Character Entry window.
- Touch OK to re-save Little Brown Jug.
- Touch Yes to overwrite Little Brown Jug.
- Press the HOME button to return to the HOME display.
- Seq 1 2 3 4 5 now appears in the Registration display area.
Record Little Brown Jug using Registration Changes as per Score 1
There are two types of recording available — MIDI and Audio.
MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) allows multi track recording with the ability to edit. It also gives you the score view. A playback instrument is required as it only records data and uses the sounds of the instrument.
Audio records all tracks at once as a .WAV or MP3 and cannot be edited. No score is available. Recordings can be played back on a variety of players.
- Select REGISTRATION 1 using the Left pedal.
- On the panel in the SONG CONTROL section press REC to select the Song Recording window
- New MIDI is selected. You are now ready and recording will start when you begin to play.
- Turn on the METRONOME if required. This will not be recorded.
- Start playing following the Registration changes as per Score 1. Remember to play the Left hand chord inversions as shown.
- Press STOP to end the recording. If you make a mistake re-select Registration 1 using the Left pedal and simply press REC as above to discard and re-record your song.
Name and Save Song LBJ 1 to USER
- On the HOME display in the Song area Touch the save icon to select the saving destination.
- The screen defaults to the User memory. Touch Save here to select the Character Entry window.
- Touch and hold Delete to delete New Song.
- Type in the file name LBJ 1 then touch OK to return to the HOME display.
- LBJ 1 is displayed.
Setup a Split Keyboard Registration for Little Brown Jug
Turn off OTS Link and ACMP
- Push the OTS LINK button to turn off the OTS Link.
- Push the ACMP ON/OFF to turn the Accompaniment Off.
Set Keyboard Fingering and Split Point
- Set Keyboard Fingering Mode to AI Full Keyboard, this will avoid changing the chords during overdub recording. On the HOME display touch Split&Fingering to select the Split Point/Fingering window.
- Using the forward arrow, select AI Full Keyboard.
- Touch the forward arrow twice to set D3 as the Split Point.
- Touch Close to return to the HOME display.
Assign Voices
- Touch the Main Voice Name to bring up the voice selection display.
- Touch Perc&Drums then Chromatic Perc and then Vibraphone.
- Touch Close to return to the HOME display.
- Touch Layer to turn off the Layer.
- Layer off is displayed
- Touch Left to turn on the Left voice.
- Touch the Left voice Name to bring up the Voice Selection display.
- Touch Guitar&Bass then Clean Solid and then touch the down arrow to page 3/3 to find Warm Solid.
- Touch Close to return to the HOME display.
Set Left Hand Octave to 0
The Left voice defaults in this case to an octave higher than required.
- Touch Menu then touch the forward arrow to go to the next page.
- Touch VoiceSetting.
- Touch Octave Left 1.
- Touch the left arrow to set Octave Left to 0. The Left Voice will now sound an octave lower.
- Touch Close.
- Left Octave 0 is shown.
- Press HOME to return to the HOME display.
Set Left Volume to 100
Left hand volume defaults to 60.
- On the HOME display touch Balance to select the ‘Balance’ display.
- Touch the mixer channel below Left to highlight the volume slider.
- Slide the Left volume to 100. Alternatively you can also use the data dial.
- Touch Close to return to the HOME display.
Memorise to Registration 6 and Name
- Press the MEMORY button in the REGISTRATION MEMORY section.
- Press REGISTRATION MEMORY 6 button to memorise the panel setup
- Press the REGIST BANK - and + buttons simultaneously to select the Registration Bank Selection display.
- Touch the Information icon to select the Registration Information window.
- REGISTRATION 6 End is currently selected. Touch the Rename icon.
- Touch and hold Delete to delete End and name Split Vibe & Gtr then touch OK.
- Touch Close to exit.
Re-save Little Brown Jug to the USER Registration Bank
- Touch the save icon to select the saving destination.
- Touch Save here to select the Character Entry window.
- Touch OK to re-save Little Brown Jug.
- Touch Yes to overwrite Little Brown Jug.
- Touch Close to return to the HOME display.
Overdub GTR&VIBE as per Score 2
An overdub adds an additional part / track to an existing song recording.
Setup Overwrite MIDI and Assign Tracks
- On the panel in the SONG CONTROL section press REC to select the Song Recording window.
- Overwrite MIDI should already be selected. Touch the Channel Arrow to expand the Channel area.
- ‘Overwrite MIDI’ defaults to all tracks ready to record. Tracks 1 (Main) & 3 (Layer) have data already recorded. Touch Keyboard All to turn Keyboard Part Record channels off.
- Touch Style All to turn to turn Style Part Record channels off.
- To assign Left to Channel 2, touch Channel 2.
- Left is already assigned to Channel 2. Touch OK to turn record Left on.
- To assign Main to Channel 4, touch Channel 1.
- Touch 4 to assign to Channel 4 then touch OK to turn record Main on.
- You are now ready to overdub record.
Record and Save Overdub Part to the Song
- Turn on the Metronome if required by pressing the METRONOME ON/OFF button. This will not be recorded.
- Touch Rec Start to begin the recording and record the Gtr & Vibe part as per Score 2.
- Press the STOP button to end the recording.
- On the HOME display in the Song area Touch the Save icon to select the saving destination.
- Touch Save here to select the Character Entry window.
- Touch Delete to delete the text 1.
- Re-name the file LBJ 2 then touch OK to return to the HOME display.
- LBJ 2 is displayed. We now have 2 songs saved in the User memory, the original and the overdub.
