The Complete Flute

Held over five days recently in Victoria’s beautiful Macedon Ranges, the Complete Flute (TCF) provides a unique opportunity for professional development forums and masterclasses, led by world-class flute professors, practitioners and orchestral principals.

This course featured special guest, Professor Emerita Leone Buyse (USA), working alongside TCF Co-Directors James Kortum, Andrew Macleod, and Mardi McSullea.

The 2024 faculty also saw a range of adjunct lectures and workshops from special guests including Prudence Davis, Wendy Clarke, Sarah Beggs, David Miller, Brock Imison, Eliza Shephard and Sophie Rowell.

Participants prepared works for masterclasses, receiving performance experience and valued feedback from the supportive audience. Dana Alison’s performance of Tchaikovsky’s Lensky’s Aria had stunningly full dynamic range and expression, the performance almost airborne at times.

Yamaha artist Andrew Macleod was in his element playing a handcrafted Yamaha YFL877 customised Gold-Plated silver flute while workshopping Amelia Kalomiris’ hypnotising performance of Gaubert’s Romance.

Ean Tzuan Lee presented Enesco’s Cantabile et Presto – ably demonstrating dextrous playing, whilst being shown the benefits of singing whilst playing the flute! David Miller ably collaborated on the Yamaha N3X AvantGrand piano, bringing the pianist’s perspective to the non-pianists in the room.

Attendees were treated to a comprehensive display of flutes and piccolos from Australian flute specialist retailer Flutes & Flutists, represented by Anne Rose and Director Mark Xiao.

The Yamaha straight headjoint Alto Flute (YFL-A421) was well-received by those who tried it ,finding the gold brass material brought an extraordinary depth of tone without the sometimes weighted feel of a harmony flute.

Yamaha Music Australia recognises the mammoth effort that went into organising this annual event and was grateful for the opportunity to support the Complete Flute and in turn the participants, many embarking on the beginnings of their professional careers as flautists.
