Rodrigo y Gabriela: Acoustic rock maestros Australian Tour 2015

Mexico’s spectacular acoustic guitar duo, ‘Rodrigo y Gabriela’ are returning for the sixth time to play to their increasingly large Australian fan base in April 2015. Their performances will take in Sydney, Melbourne, and Bluesfest in Byron Bay.

Rodrigo y Gabriela have taken the mainstream media and music lovers the world over by storm as they showcase their blistering original songs and famous cover versions in their live set on their Yamaha NX guitars.

To be hailed by Acoustic Magazine UK as “the most exciting and intoxicating live acoustic performers on the planet” might cramp the style of many artists. But since winning that praise, Rodrigo y Gabriela have swept all before them. That includes wowing the President of the United States, Barack Obama and his wife Michelle in autumn 2010 when they played at the Whitehouse.

John Shand from the SMH raved that “Rodrigo has become even more virtuosic in his lead guitarist role, although it is Gabriela’s playing that continues to define the sound, her rhythmic work combining tempestuous strumming with furious percussive attacks on her guitar’s body.”

Live in concert, Rodrigo y Gabriela are nothing short of thrilling. You can trust The Guardian when it reported that their live show was “So ear-poppingly dexterous, so ineffably charming and so supremely entertaining… their hyper-speed virtuosity is mesmerizing.”

Rodrigo Sanchez and Gabriela Quintero have been playing guitar together for more than seventeen years. First as young thrash metal fans in their native Mexico City, then as innocents abroad street musicians in Dublin, Ireland at the turn of the Millennium; to the globe straddling, film scoring, record breaking artists they are today.

‘9 Dead Alive’ is the recently released album and sees Rodrigo y Gabriela playing face to face, guitar versus guitar, bursting with melodic energy and rhythmic invention. Recorded at their Pacific Coast hideaway in their late summer, the album captures the warmth and spontaneity of two great musicians riffing and jamming together; perfectly distilled into 9 new songs teeming with desire, elegance and gusto.

The album was recorded and produced by Rod & Gab at their studio in Ixtapa, Mexico. Mixing was handled by Andrew Scheps (Black Sabbath, Adele, Metallica, Lana Del Rey) in Los Angeles.

Each of the songs on the album is a personal celebration of individuals who have passed on, but through their deeds and words still resonate in the 21st century. Going as far back as Eleanor of Acquitaine (1122 – 1204) to Viktor Frankl (1905 – 1997), and including a tribute to one of Rod & Gab’s enduring touchstones – animals and nature. This diverse and fascinating list will strike a chord with anyone familiar with the duo’s passion for human rights, literature, history and philosophy.
