New features

The instrument features a newly designed valve casing, with every element, from the raw material, to the bracing between each casing, to the height and pitch of screw threads on both top and bottom valve caps, to a newly designed barrel-shaped leadpipe screw, painstakingly analyzed and refined to provide improved breath efficiency and ideal playing resistance.

After 12 years playing a pivotal role for professional musicians around the world, the YFH8301Z and YFH8315G flugelhorns have been redeveloped in conjunction with Bobby Shew (YFH8310Z) and Wayne Bergeron (YFH8315G). State of the art Yamaha manufacturing technology unites perfectly with the visions of these two renowned artists to deliver stunning evolutions in Custom Flugelhorn tone and playability.

The new YFH8310Z has been developed with supervision and input from Bobby Shew, resulting in a high performance instrument that retains traditional flugelhorn tone and styling. The instrument features stability and rich tonality across the range of the instrument, allowing new levels of musical expression. The unique character of this instrument will stand out in live jazz venues as well as studio applications.

Thanks to invaluable direction from Wayne Bergeron, the YFH 8315G is an innovative model that takes flugelhorn tone and playability into a new era. In addition to a phosphor bronze leadpipe screw that is the heaviest ever used in a Yamaha flugelhorn, this model features a two piece gold brass bell and a leadpipe that is longer and more rigid than normal, resulting in tone that is full and present.

“I’ve always loved how Yamaha flugelhorns play. But what impresses me the most is that Yamaha is always trying to make them better, and this new Z is no exception. Between the designers in Japan, the Atelier team here in the US and myself, we’ve lifted the new Gen II Custom Z flugel to an even higher level. It’s Just so easy and fun to play.” – Bobby Shew
