LANDMARK PIANO INSTALLATION AT EDITH COWAN UNIVERSITY NOW COMPLETE
One of the Largest Piano Installations in Australia
March 2026
Yamaha Music Australia has successfully completed one of the largest institutional piano
installations in the country, delivering and preparing a comprehensive fleet of instruments
for the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) at Edith Cowan
University (ECU). The project saw the supply and installation of 61 upright pianos, 31
grand pianos and 10 premium Clavinova cabinet pianos, creating a campus-wide network
of professional Yamaha instruments across teaching studios, rehearsal spaces and
performance venues, empowering students and faculty to learn, rehearse and perform on
instruments worthy of the stage.
The installation reinforces Yamaha's commitment to music education in Australia and its
long-standing partnership with leading institutions dedicated to developing the next
generation of performers, composers, and educators.
"This project represents a significant investment in the future of music
education," said
Simon Goldsworthy, General Manager at Yamaha Music Australia. "By equipping
WAAPA
and ECU with world-class instruments, we are helping create an environment where
students can train to the highest professional standards and realise their artistic
potential."
WAAPA's Executive Dean, Professor David Shirley said "We are delighted to be
working in partnership with Yamaha to ensure that current and future WAAPA/ECU students have
access to world class instruments that will prove invaluable in shaping the next
generation of leading practitioners".
Complex Logistics and Preparation
Delivering instruments of this scale required extensive coordination across
manufacturing, shipping, storage, technical preparation, and installation.
Bernard Crowe, Direct Institutions Sales Manager at Yamaha Music Australia, highlighted
the complexity of the process:
"These pianos were manufactured in Japan and shipped to Fremantle Port before
being
transported to a specialised third-party facility for storage and preparation. All upright
pianos were fully set up by technicians offsite between four and six months prior to
delivery to ensure consistency and performance readiness. The installation involved the
coordinated delivery of 61 uprights, 31 grands, and 10 digital pianos. Every piano received
additional tuning and regulation after installation to meet performance standards. It was
a complex logistical operation requiring precise planning and close collaboration
between Yamaha, our technicians, and ECU."
Supporting Excellence in Music Education
The new instruments will support a broad range of activities, from individual practice and
teaching to ensemble rehearsal and professional-level performance.
For students, the installation ensures consistent access to high-quality instruments that
respond with precision, reliability, and expressive capability, essential for developing
advanced technique and musicianship.
Yamaha Music Australia thanks Edith Cowan University and WAAPA for their trust and
partnership on this landmark project and looks forward to continuing to support their
musical community for many years to come.
