Built in 1998 and situated in the beautiful parklands at Wynnum West, Brisbane, Iona College’s superb Performing Arts Centre incorporates five separate, versatile venues. IPAC is widely used for musical, band and theatrical performances, as well as a range of social functions.

The 500-seat Auditorium has a raked floor and concert lighting system. The fully equipped performance stage incorporates an orchestra pit and modern multi-media facilities.
IPAC Production Technician Craig Dye was recently tasked with replacing the Auditorium’s aging PA system. “We really needed a system in here that could cope with everything; from speech through to a rock show”, says Craig.
In order to establish exactly what the auditorium required, Craig utilised Yamaha Sound System Simulator (also known as “YS3”); an innovative, free software program that offers a precise and easy-to-use simulation of sound pressure level distribution, frequency response and other attributes when installing speakers in any type of venue.
“I used YS3 so I could see that I was going to get the coverage in the room that I wanted, and it would fit into the budget”, explains Craig. Armed with the complete performance report and gear specification generated by YS3, Craig then turned to Brisbane Sound Group and Yamaha Commercial Audio to provide the system.

Dan Fittell of Brisbane Sound Group was happy to help; “Every job that the Yamaha Installation Series speakers have gone to , the customer has been blown away”, said Dan. Dan assisted Craig to integrate a full Yamaha system into the venue, with commissioning finishing up in May 2011.
The Front of House speaker system now consists of 2x IF2115/95 as left/right, an IF2112/64 as centre, 2x IF2112/95 as delays and 2x IS1118 subs. These are powered by a range of Yamaha PC-N and Tn Series amps. Processing is handled by a Yamaha DME24-N open architecture DSP unit and mixing duties by a Yamaha 01V96VCM digital mixer.
Craig has plans to expand the venue’s capabilities with a large projector and the ability to change from lecture to movie mode at the push of a button. There are already a pair of Yamaha A12 passive speakers on hand are to cover rear speaker duties in 5.1 mode. “That’s why we went with the DME24-N’, Craig explains about the inclusion of the expandable DSP processing unit, which is capable of running 5.1 processing and sending and receiving almost any audio format, “It’s worth having – especially with the way digital media is going.”

“This PA has got us covered now”, states Craig, “I’m really happy with what we’re hearing – so’s the boss.”
